What is a Computer Mouse?

A computer mouse also called as pointing device is an input device that helps to point data on screen. It also helps to select, highlight content and drag-drop controls. The standard computer mouse have a left button, right button, and scroll bar wheel. In computer science, the fullform of mouse is Manually Operated User Selection Equipment.

Parts of Computer Mouse

The following are the different parts of a computer mouse:

Left button: The left button in the mouse is used to select or move the files.

Right button: The right button in the mouse is used to display extra menus.

Scroll Wheel: The scroll wheel is used to scroll up and down on any page. It is located in between two buttons.

Laser Sensor: Laser sensors track the movement of the mouse with greater accuracy than optical sensors, but they are more expensive.

History of Computer Mouse

The following is the history of the computer mouse −

1964: The first computer mouse was invented by Douglas Engelbart. This mouse used two separate wheels to detect movement across the X and Y axes.

1965: The term "mouse" was named as the shape of the device looks like a small rodent (Mice).

1980s: The mouse becomes widely adopted with the introduction of the Macintosh. The first optical mouse was researched. Optical mouse is a device that uses LEDs or Laser to track movement.

1984: The first wireless mouse was invented by John Markoff & Sol Sherr. It is a device that connects to a computer without using any wires.

2004: The first laser mouse was invented by a team led by Doug Baney at Agilent Laboratories. It is a kind of optical mouse that uses a laser diode to track movement instead of an LED.

Types of Computer Mouse

The following are the different types of mouse −

1. Wired Mouse

The wired mouse is connected to a computer through a USB port cable. It provides fast response time as data is directly transmitted through the cable. It is more dependable than a wireless mouse but can be challenging to use with portable devices like laptops.

2. Wireless Mouse

The wireless mouse is connected to a computer without any need for a cable. It communicates with the computer using radio waves or Bluetooth technology. It is more convenient than a wired mouse, though it may cost more and have a shorter battery life.

3. Trackball Mouse

Trackball mouse have a ball on top of the mouse that the user moves to control the cursor on the screen. To perform left and right clicks on a trackball mouse, the user needs to roll the trackball with the middle three fingers of the hand and use the thumb and pinky finger.

4. Touchpad Mouse

A touchpad mouse is an input device on laptops made of a flat touch-sensitive surface that allows user to move the cursor by dragging their finger across it. The touchpad mouse contains separate physical buttons for left and right clicks.

5. 3D Mouse

3D mouse also called as CAD mouse uses a sensor to track the hand movement of a user in three dimensions. It enables interaction with 3D objects on the screen. It contains different parts such as multi-axis sensors, accelerometers, and IR sensors.

Benefits of Using a Computer Mouse

The following are the benefits of using the mouse −

  • Accuracy − The mouse is more precise than other input devices, such as keyboards, for tasks like clicking small objects and selecting text.
  • Speed − Using a mouse provides faster navigation of the graphical user interface (GUI) than other devices.
  • Comfort −The mouse is more comfortable for long-term use compared to other input devices.
