Activity 9. Calculating Enthalpy Using Hess's Law

The document provides information and questions about calculating enthalpy using Hess's Law for three chemical reactions: 1) C(s) + 1/2O2(g) → CO(g), 2) the formation of glycerol, and 3) the reaction Fe2O3(s) + 2Al(s) → Al2O3(s) + 2 Fe2(s).

Calculating Enthalpy using Hess’s Law

Name: _________________________________________ Date: _______________

Objectives:
Calculate enthalpy of reactions using Hess’s Law

1. Find the standard molar enthalpy (ΔH) for the reaction:

C(s) + 1/2O2(g) → CO(g) ΔH = ?
Given the enthalpy of the following reactions:
C(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g) ΔH = -394 kJ
CO2(g) → CO + 1/2O2(g) ΔH = +283 kJ

2. The enthalpy glycerol formation is the enthalpy change for the reaction:
3C(s) + 4H2(g) + 1 1/2O2(g) → C3H8O3(l) ΔH = ?
Calculate the enthalpy ΔH of formation of glycerol, in kJ mol-1, using the thermochemical equation below:
C + O2 → CO2 ΔH = -394 kJ
H2 + 1/2O2 → H2O ΔH = -286 kJ
C3H8O3 + 3 1/2O2 → 3CO2 + 4H2O ΔH = -1654 kJ
3. The standard enthalpy changes for the formation of aluminum oxide and iron (III) oxide are:
2Al(s) + 3/2O2(g) → Al2O3(s) ΔH = -1676 kJ
2Fe2(s) + 3/2O2(g) → Fe2O3(s) ΔH = -824 kJ

Calculate ΔH for the reaction: Fe2O3(s) + 2Al(s) → Al2O3(s) + 2 Fe2(s) ΔH = ?
