Balancing chemical equations (Answers)

1. Write down the total number of atoms of each element

next to the formula of each compound:
a. O3 (ozone) O 3
b. NH3 (ammonia) N 1; H 3
c. C7H5N3O6 (TNT) C 7; H 5; N 3; O 6
d. Al2(SO4)3 (aluminium sulphate) Al 2; S 3; O 12
e. NaCN (sodium cyanide) Na 1; C 1; N 1

2. Copy and attempt to balance the following equations.

Don’t worry if you get stuck… use a pencil and rub it out
and start again…
a. 2Li + I2 ® 2LiI

b. 2H2 + O2 ® 2H2O

c. CaCO3 ® CaO + CO2

d. 2N2 + 3H2 ® NH3

e. S + 3F2 ® SF6

f. 4Al + 3O2 ® 2Al2O3

g. 2K + 2H2O ® 2KOH + H2

h. S8 + 8O2 ® 8SO2

i. S8 + 12O2 ® 8SO3

j. P4 + 5O2 ® 2P2O5

NB Accept any multiples of the above, including those with

fractions eg:
K + H2O ® KOH + ½ H2
