Fire Classifications As Per EN2: Fire Classification Description Examples Extinguishing Agent Note

Fire classifications refer to categorizing fires based on the material that is burning, with the goal of selecting the appropriate extinguishing agent. There are six main classifications: class A for solid materials like wood or paper extinguished with water; class B for liquids or liquefiable solids like gasoline extinguished with foam; class C for gases extinguished with dry chemicals but gas supply should be cut off first; class D for metals extinguished with metal fire powders; class F for cooking oils extinguished with special saponification agents; and descriptions, examples, and notes are provided for clarification but are not part of the official DIN EN 2 classification standard. Using unsuitable extinguishing agents may be ineffective or dangerous.

Fire classifications as per EN2

Fire classifications refer to a classification of fires by the material that is burning. This
classification is mainly required to ensure the correct choice of the appropriate extinguishing agent.

Fire
Classification
Description Examples
Extinguishing
agent
Note

Fires involving solid
materials, usually of
an organic nature, in
which combustion
normally takes place
with the formation of
glowing embers.
Wood, coal,
paper, textiles,
car tires, some
plastics, straw
Water, aqueous
solutions, foam,
ABC powder

Fires involving
liquids or liquefiable
solids.
Gasoline, alcohol,
tar, wax, many
plastics, ether,
varnish, resin
Foam, ABC
powder, BC
powder, carbon
dioxide
Also materials that
liquefy as the
temperature rises

Fires involving
gases.
Ethyne
(acetylene),
hydrogen, natural
gas, methane,
propane, butane,
city gas
ABC powder, BC
powder, carbon
dioxide in
exceptional cases
only (very rarely
there are specially
constructed fire
extinguishers for
this with gas jet
nozzles), prevent
gas supply by
shifting the pipe
As a rule, only
extinguish fires
caused by gases if
the gas supply can
be halted, as
otherwise an
explosive gas-air
mixture can form.

Fires involving
metals.
Aluminum,
magnesium,
sodium,
potassium, lithium
and their alloys
Metal fire powder
(D powder), dry
sand, dry road or
cattle salt, dry
cement, gray iron
shavings
Never use water as
an extinguishing
agent for class D
fires

Fires involving
cooking media
(vegetable or animal
oils and fats) in
cooking appliances.
Cooking oils and
cooking fats
Special
extinguishing agent
(for saponification)
Never use water as
an extinguishing
agent for class F
(fat-burning) fires.
The fire classifications and descriptions match the wording of DIN EN 2 exactly. Examples,
extinguishing agents and notes are for clarification purposes and are not part of DIN EN 2.

Using unsuitable extinguishing agents may be ineffective under certain circumstances, or may
even be dangerous.
