Assignment Fall 2015-05-2

This document contains homework assignments for a symmetry and group theory course. Students are asked to 1) formulate ligand group orbitals and metal-ligand molecular orbitals for octahedral and tetrahedral complexes, 2) draw qualitative molecular orbital diagrams for NH3, CO, ML4, and ML6 complexes, reducing symmetry where needed, and 3) analyze the normal modes of vibration of NH3, CH4, and CO2 by taking bond distances as basis vectors. The homework is due on November 19, 2015.

IISER Pune, Fall 2015, Homework 5

Due on November 19, 2015 (Before Class)
Date: November 8, 2015
1.

Formulate ligand group orbitals using SALC and MOs for bonding octahedral and tetrahedral complexes.

2.

Draw qualitative MO diagram of the following molecules:

(a) NH3
(b) CO (c) ML4
(d) ML6
Hint: You can reduce the higher symmetry point groups to lower
symmetry point groups for convenience wherever required.

3.

of the following molecules. Take bond distances as basis vectors.
(a) NH3
(b) CH4
(c) CO2
