Reflection and Ray Diagrams

Light and sound reflect from surfaces in predictable ways. Light travels in straight lines and reflects at the same angle it hits a surface, which can be shown through ray diagrams using a ruler and arrows. Mirrors form virtual images that are laterally inverted due to the reflection of light rays.

Reflection and Ray Diagrams GCSE P1

Where do echoes come from?

How does light reflect from surfaces?

Light and sound reflect from surfaces. Echoes are the reflections of sound; we hear a sound
again as it travels towards a surface, reflects off it
When drawing ray diagrams, always:
and back towards us.
• Use a ruler
Light travels in straight lines. • Draw an arrow to show what
direction the light is travelling in.
When a ray of light hits a surface,
angle of reflection = angle of incidence

When we see an object in a mirror, we see a virtual image which is laterally inverted.
