SPECIFIC INSTRUCTION FOR THE CANDIDATE

Qualification: Agricultural Crops Production NCII

Title of PBA: Prepare land for planting

Unit of Competency Covered: Plant Crops

Please read carefully:

Given the necessary tools, materials and equipment, you are required to prepare and cultivate a land for
the seed/seedling/sapling to be planted with accordance with accepted institutional/industry standard.

(Allotted time: 4 hrs.)

Specific Instructions:

1. Prepare the tools intended for digging, cultivating and removing debris.
2. Make a three 1m x 4m plot garden, use tie box for consistency.
3. Using bolo, remove weeds. Use shovel in removing debris like stones and put it on a
wheelbarrow.
4. Throw the weed to a compost pit. The stones will be delivered outside the premise.
5. Cultivate the land by digging and adding basal fertilizer.

Perform Nursery Operations

This unit covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to perform nursery operations for
agricultural crops including established nursery shed, preparation of growing media, transplanting
germinated seedlings and handling of nursery tools and procedures.

A nursery is a place where plants are propagated and grown to a desired age. Nurseries may
supply plants for gardens, agriculture, forestry and conservation biology. Nurseries are important
because it assures the production of genetically improved quality planting material.

Nursery Operations are needed to maintain the productivity of a nursery, either big or small.
Maintenances are done provided that it is a standard of Phil GAP or the Philippine Good Agricultural
Practices. Preventing inclement weather for the betterment of nursery facilities.

Nursery operations include determining planting materials according to kinds and varieties, the
quality of seeds according to prescribed characteristics, conduct seed testing, preparing tools, farm
implements and simple equipment according to work requirements, basic pre-operative checking from
wear and corrosion, maintaining sanitation prescribed by Phil GAP, performing of placing growing media
to containers, setting up shed for the growing medias, and performing plant propagation techniques
based on recommended practices.
Plant Crops

This unit covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to conduct activities related to land
preparation and planting of agricultural crops. This unit also includes proper handling of
seeds/seedlings/saplings for planting and transplanting, proper use of tools and equipment, conduct
land preparation and field lay-out.

Preparing land for planting is necessary in planting crops. Tools, materials and equipment are
prepared in clearing out debris and unnecessary weeds. Applying fertilizer unto the cultivated land will
ensure good crop production with accordance to safety procedures.

Conducting field lay-out is necessary in planting crops because there is a space needed for every
plant to gain nutrients. Digging holes is the basic skill in planting crops. Holes intended for planting and
putting poles for plants.

Performing direct seeding should be done according to the recommended rate, distance and
depth of the seed being planted. Proper safety procedures should be followed according to the safety
and health standards or OSHS.

Transplanting of seedling from the nursery to the field should be performed with safety
procedures to ensure that the plant is ready is to be planted.

Please read carefully:

Given necessary tools, materials and equipment, you are required to prepare and create a growing
media for ginger in accordance with accepted institutional/industry standard. (Allotted time: 2 hrs.)

Specific Instructions

1. Prepare 1 kilo of loam/moist soil, 1 kilo of sand and 2 kilos of humus


2. In a flat ground, mix thoroughly the given materials using a shovel.
3. Add water to make the mixture easier to mix.
4. Place the mixture into the containers
5. Using a bolo, dig 3 inches below the soil, place the eye of ginger
6. Cover it with the soil being dug.
7. Place it on the nursery with prevention to inclement weather.
