CO5 deliver effective presentations in English using appropriate body language

5.1 Dressing and grooming:


Dressing and grooming are important aspects of communication skills, and are related to how you present
yourself and your ideas to others.
Dressing:
Dress is considered an aspect of non-verbal communication and has social significance for the audience.
Dress also includes the things that people wear such as jewelry, ties, handbags, hats and glasses.
Tips:
1. Put clothes appropriate for the occasion.
2. Ensure clothes are clean and free from wrinkles.
3. Choose clothes that fit properly and confidently.
4. Wear appropriate footwear.
5. Layer clothes for warmth.
6. Wear appropriate jewelry, hats, handbags, glasses etc.
7. Wear modest clothes that are not too revealing or too casual.
8. Choose colour and style that complements your personality, skin tone, and body type.
9. Test your outfit before wearing it first time
10. Be aware of cultural norms and expectations regarding clothing to ensure respect and understanding.
Grooming:
Grooming is the process of making yourself look neat and attractive. It involves washing, brushing and combing
hair, trimming nails, cleaning teeth, using deodorant. Grooming also includes dressing appropriately, take care
of skin, styling presentably,
Tips:
1. Brushing teeth and flossing
2. Washing and moisturizing face
3. Grooming hair ( combing, brushing, styling)
4. Shaving and maintaining facial hair
5. Trimming nails and keeping them clean.
6. Showering or bathing regularly
7. Using deodorant
8. Applying perfume
9. Wearing makeup
10. avoid habits that can impair your hygiene and grooming, such as smoking, chewing gum, biting your
nails.
Importance of dressing and grooming:
1. Dressing and grooming correctly helps you create the first impression among your audience.
2. It helps to enhance their confidence
3. It shows your personality
4. It shows your attitude
5. It shows how sincere you are towards your work
6. How you present yourself can affect your credibility, confidence, and rapport with your colleagues,
clients, and managers.

5.3 PowerPoint Presentation:
PowerPoint presentations work like slide shows. To convey a message or a story, you break it down into slides.
It is the digital projection of a topic. It enhances the clarity and communication of the subject, along with adding
a visual aspect to the data which makes it more appealing and presentable.
 Importance of PowerPoint Presentation:
1. It is easy to understand: It is in image or graphic form so it is easy to understand.
2. It is easy to remember: graphical communication is easy to remember that verbal communication
3. It is time saving as you don’t have to draw diagrams or write text.
4. It is used to focus on the important ideas or points.
5. Animated or Graphical representation will make more eye catchy and interesting for listeners.
6. Increased Confidence: Creating and delivering PowerPoint presentations can help individuals build
confidence in their public speaking abilities.
7. 3. Enhanced Creativity: PowerPoint presentations offer a wide range of design options, allowing
individuals to showcase their creativity and design skills
8. Numerous Resources: PowerPoint have capability to add references from Internet by a single click
offering a series of cues.
9. Easy accessible: PowerPoint can be easily sent on email, shared on a low memory device.
5.4 Kinesics:
Kinesics is associated with facial expressions, postures, gesticulation or gestures and eye contact. Generally
communication by body movements is classified as kinesics. The study of body motion and facial expressions
as related to speech is called Kinesics. It is an important factor in non- verbal or oral communication. Kinesics
is non-verbal behavior related to the movements of a part of the body or the body as whole. Human beings give
valuable information through the various movements of their body. Kinesics plays an important role in face to
face communication. There has to be coordination between the facial expression and the message.
E.g. When the forefinger and middle finger are indicated in the shape of the letter `V‟ it becomes the sign for
victory, nodding of the head, waving of the hand, shrugging of shoulders etc.
2 ASPECTS OF BODY LANGUAGE:-
Body language means the message conveyed through the expressions on the face of the speaker, movements of
body, eyes and through the dress and appearance. It is the method of communication through different parts of
body other than tongue. Body language is a non-verbal mode of communication.

1. GESTURES:-
Ans:-Dictionary meaning of Gesture is a motion of the face, body, eyes or limbs used to convey the message. In
face to face communication gestures have more importance. Gestures are used to emphasis on the ideas or
thoughts in oral communication. Gestures are used when a person does not know the local language. The dump
and deaf people are fully dependent upon the use of gestures. Gestures convey enthusiasm, attitude, and emotions
of a person. Our hate, joy, grief are shown through various bodily movement. Various common gestures in
routine communication indicate vario us meanings.
For Example:-
1) A gesture like handshake displays friendship and warmth.
2) Shrugging shoulders indicates indifference
3) Upraised hand indicates request for patience

2. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS:-
It is said that human face is the mirror of his heart. Facial expression come naturally hence it is beyond the
control of the speaker. Oral communication becomes more effective cause of facial expressions. There has to be
coordination between the facial expression and the message. Facial expression expresses joy, sorrow, smile and
smirk etc.
For Example:-
1) Raising eyebrows indicate wonder surprise.
2) Furrowed lines on forehead indicate worries, tension.
3) Laughing is indicated by widely opened teeth and spread lips.

3. POSTURES:-
All actions and positions of body organs indicate message. They way in which we stand, sit, walk out, sleep,
work, all tell more about our emotions and attitude. When sender speaks to a large audience, his posture should
be appropriate. A good posture can indicate a confident attitude.
For Example:-The speaker must avoid holding chair or the mike, this sends negative message to the audience.
When a speaker speaks, he should stand erect and it gives good impression.

.4 EYE CONTACT:-
a. Eye contact is one of the effective means of establishing rapport with the audience.
b. It shows your self-confidence.
c. It makes good or bad impression.
d. If a speaker do not maintain an eye contact with the listeners, listeners can think that speaker is ignoring
them and do not pay attention to the speaker.
e. Through eye contact the speaker gets signals whether the channel of communication is open or not and
get feedback.
State any two common gestures used in communication and its meaning.
Ans:-Following are the different common gestures used in the process of communication with their meaning.
1) Waving of hand – It has two meanings in communication. a) Used to indicate good bye and
b) Used to draw or seek somebody’s attention.
2) Pointing the index finger indicates indifference or being unconcerned.
3) Thumbs up sign indicates allegation or charge. It can also be used to rebuke somebody.
4) Nodding of head can be used to say yes or no.

Que. Explain the importance of Body Language in face to face communication?


Body language is a non-verbal mode of communication. Body language means the message conveyed through
the expressions on the face of the speaker, movements of body, eyes and through the dress and appearance. It is

and postures in routine communication indicate various meanings. It is very necessary to maintain appropriate
gestures and postures during oral communication. Wrong use of gestures or postures can lead to
misunderstandings.

Que. What is posture? What tips should be followed during formal presentation?
Ans:- Posture refers to the way we stand, sit and carry ourselves. It tells how bold, confident, submissive or
timid a person is. A person who stands, sits and walks upright commands respect and attention. Therefore, a
professional has to cultivate and maintain elegance in his/her own sitting, standing and walking posture.
Following tips should be followed during formal presentation:

1) Do not droop your shoulders.


2) Lift your feet clearly off the floor while walking, avoid dragging them.
3) Do not sit on the edge of the chair, it communicates unease and discomfort.
4) Avoid crossing your legs while sitting or standing before your audience.
5) Do not lean on the lectern/podium
Que. What is the importance of dress and appearance?
Ans:- The dressing and physical appearance of a person conveys his/her attitude, liking, life style and social
status. A person who does not maintain himself/herself well is not likely to win the appreciation of the audience.
If the choices go wrong, one cannot expect the right results. For example if we wear a crumpled dress for an
interview, we will surely lose the job. Our choices of clothes, hairstyle, the jewelry we wear, can talk a great
deal about our belief, attitude, values and status. It is also important to adapt our appearance according to the
occasion like dressing for formal, semi formal and informal situations.
