1. Draw and explain the sand casting steps using neat diagram.
2. Explain the work of pattern in casting. How patterns can be clasiified. Briefly
explain each types of pattern.
3. Why Allowance is provided to the casting. Explain.
4. Determine the dimensions of the pattern for casting shown in fig. the
shrinkage allowance is 30 mm/meter, machining allowance on all surface
including centre hole is 1 mm. the draft allowance for external and internal
dimension is 0.75 and 1 degree respectively.

7. What are the desirable property of moulding sand we require. Explain each
property in detail
8. A mold sprue is 20 cm long, and the cross-sectional area at its base is 2.5 cm2.
The sprue feeds a horizontal runner leading into a mold cavity whose volume
is 1560 cm3. Determine: (a) velocity of the molten metal at the base of the
sprue, (b) volume rate of flow, and (c) time to fill the mold.
9. A cylindrical riser must be designed for a sand-casting mold. The casting
itself is a steel rectangular plate with dimensions 7:5 cm x 12:5 cm x 2.0 cm.
Previous observations have indicated that the total solidification time (TTS)
for this casting = 1.6 min. The cylinder for the riser will have a diameter-to-
height ratio =1.0. Determine the dimensions of the riser so that its TTS = 2.0
min.
10. With a cylindrical riser, prove that for a longer solidification time, diameter of
riser should be equal to height of riser.
11. Compare the solidification times for castings of three different shapes of same
volume: Cube, cylindrical (height=diameter) and spherical.
