Introduction to the very basics of the internet e.g. Dns, using


search engines, using Wikipedia, checking your Email.
Objectives of the lab

• What is internet.
• How to connect to the internet.
• Basic terminologies of internet.
• Network: In simple words a network is defined as communication
between two or more nodes to share information and resources.
Nodes can be digital systems or two computers etc.
• Internet: internet is a group of small and big networks world wide
connected together via means of guided or unguided media or
Internet is defined as network of networks.
• Arpanet (Advanced research project agency): Internet is developed from a
very popular network “Arpanet” .it is developed by Us department of
defense during 2nd world war and was completed in 1969.
• ISP: Internet Service Provider: A company that provide us with the service
of internet e.g PTCL

How to connect to the internet.
• We have various ways to connect to the internet. Some of the important
and commonly used are
• Dial Up: a very simple way to connect to the internet which is establish
over telephone lines.
• DSL (digital subscriber line): works similar to the traditional phone lines.
• Broadband: is a high bandwidth data transmission connection.
Basics terminologies of internet
• www (world wide web): is defined as the virtual space where information such as
documents, images text etc. are located that can be accessed via hyperlinks and
URLs.
• DNS:Domain Name System. The main function of DNS is to translate domain names
into IP Addresses, which computers can understand.
• URL: Uniform Resource Locator e.g. www.google.com
• Search engines: is defined as the set of software's that is used to search information
from the www.
Examples: google, yahoo.
• Web browser: A web browser is a client side software that is used to
traverse (transmit/receive) data from server to the client system and vice
versa e.g. server client

• Examples: Internet explorer, Mozilla Firefox and google chrome.


• Web page: is a web document generally written in a language often
HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language).
• Web Site: is a collection of web pages that can be located over internet
with the help of URL.
• HTTP(Hyper text transfer protocol): set of rules for transferring files.
• Email: Electronic mail is a way of sending message (mail) in a digital
format over a network.
• Wikipedia: is a free online encyclopedia, created and edited by volunteers
around the world and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation.
Lab report task
• Write a report on “Electrical Engineering” using Google and Wikipedia.
